Endoscopic Care
Endoscopic surgery
What Is Endoscopic Surgery?
Endoscopic surgery uses a thin, flexible camera inserted through the mouth or rectum to look directly at the digestive tract and, when needed, treat problems from the inside.
Who Is Endoscopic Treatment For?
Endoscopic treatment is for patients with symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, GI bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or a history of colon polyps or cancer. It is also used for people needing evaluation or follow‑up of ulcers, tumors, or complications after previous bariatric or abdominal surgery.
About The Surgery
During an upper endoscopy, a flexible scope is passed through the mouth to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine, while colonoscopy evaluates the colon and rectum.
After Surgery
Most patients go home the same day after a brief recovery period, with mild throat soreness or bloating that usually improves within hours to a day.
Lifetime Effects
Endoscopic screening and polyp removal can lower your risk of colon cancer, while early detection of ulcers or tumors can lead to more effective treatment. For many patients with reflux, procedures like Stretta and related antireflux care can provide long‑term symptom relief, reduce dependence on medications, and protect the esophagus from ongoing acid damage.
Help & Support
Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions can endoscopic surgery help diagnose or treat?
A breast lift reshapes and lifts the breasts but does not significantly change their size. If you want a fuller or smaller look, you may consider combining it with breast augmentation or reduction.
What is Stretta and how does it help reflux?
Stretta is an endoscopic radiofrequency treatment performed at the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to reduce chronic acid reflux. Dr. Pastrana is one of the few surgeons in Florida who offers this technique, which can improve symptoms and decrease reliance on reflux medications for selected patients.
Do I have to be put to sleep for an endoscopy or colonoscopy?
Most patients receive sedation so they are relaxed and comfortable during the procedure and usually remember little or nothing of it. You will be monitored closely by the care team and will need someone to drive you home afterward.
How should I prepare for an endoscopy
Preparation depends on the type of endoscopy, but most patients are asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the procedure so the doctor can see clearly and reduce the risk of aspiration.
